Tweaked Photo's

Taz Maguire
OK guys, Ive sorted through and tweaked the photos (Some were a bit dark - My fault) I've also cropped out the lines of the projector screen (Again my fault) A few peoples programme ones need to be redone quickly on monday because they were blurry:

Joe
Abbi E (Although it might just be my eyesight)
Alys

Hayley there is two of you and I dont know which you wanted
Leanne and Rach - Yours may need to be redone because you are very close to the bottom of the shot but thats up to publicity

Hayley im leaving you to deal with the character ones but Abbi F and Beckie...Do you want me to turn the programme ones into squares? Because at the moment they are rectangles and some need some work if they are going to be turned into squares

Okk...thats about it - Photos going up on the group in a min

xx

Table Cloth ( sorted )

Taran Sorted this. All of the places, food and cups are glued to the cloth meaning that it's a lot quicker and easier to set up and clear off. However the comic joke of trying to eat the food then getting interupted can't work because we can't lift the food.
Solution one = make a joke out of the fact that they are stuck to the table.
Solution two = everyone has a biscuit / jaffa cake which they can down by the end of the scene.

This was such a disappointment to me and perhaps the group though it wasn't voiced. I very much enjoyed the projection that we used to open Sweeney Todd as it set's the feeling for a production really well. Also the credits at for the production were going to be projected on the screen along with thank you's as the group agreed that they became very laboriousness when they are done at the end of productions. Finally though it made the overall production seem smarter and at a more professional level which is what BTEC Performing Arts as a company which is how we aimed to be perceived.

On a publicity stance this meant that posters did not go up everywhere as was planned. This is mainly because all of people printer credits were used up on the first copies and it was simply tooo expensive. This in my opinion impacted greatly on the audience that came to watch, the evidence being in the fact that there were many empty seats on the Friday night.

Me, James and Hayley all met in the library and boasting as I may be, I came up with the idea that the evil characters could be boasting about being how evil they are to assert that they are in fact evil. The result of which was given to the cast, specifically the evil ones. It was rehearsed and slotted into the pantomime in act one.

Evil's and Goodies Task

James Sampson
id like to speak to everyone before we get started tomorrow. i just wanna say some stuff about panto and shit. and i am suggesting that we skip doing a scene tomorrow in one of the lessons. and set you some evil and goodie tasks.

The problem with the evil characters is that becuase there were a lot of us and the only really evil characters were Hook, chessy and evil step mother as the other evil's are comical. I personally feel that the rest of the evils were overshadowed by James as the red queen and though the rest of us wanted to be evil we did have the lines to assert us as such.

Making Evil Stepmother Evil

I was being far too nice. Initially I was able to perform very strongly as an evil character however as the rehearsals went on I frankly lost it. Whether this was through over rehearsal, tiredness, stress or a general lack of self confidence I had to get it back for the show. This surprisingly for me was one of the hardest things I've had to do during the whole course. I couldn't bring my self to enjoy being violent, though I didn't expect this when I started the role. It was completely against my nature and honestly just felt wrong in the whole performance. But I pushed through it and honestly acted the most that I've ever had to do in my life. I was successful. This was proven when one of the little boys from the school performance walk past me, gave me and exceptionally evil look and said "I don't like you". Proof.

We Can Do It

Hayley Quinn Cooper
I really think after tonight, we can do this, seriously guys we can, but we have to be huge, shout if you think you're not loud enough, use the stage, we have to do everything we've been advised to, because you know for a fact, that when we do, the second we make the conscious choice to really move on and give it every last fibre of our being, you know it's going to all click into place and be fantastic.

now, i'm off to learn my lines and lyrics and practice doing the weird ass knee thing in the finale.

wish me luck because i seriously suck so much arse at it.

Also, if anyone wants any help with anything let me know, also doing Charmign and Cinders photos tonight, and if Taz Maguire's internet works, could you send me the Red and Rapz photos? Ta'! :D doing April and Alys tomorrow and then they will all be made over the weekend.
Like ·  · Follow post · 10 November 2011 at 19:16

Hayley Quinn Cooper also, i think if we are in rehearsals and someone else is in the audience watching, i think it would be perfectly acceptable to just shout "LOUDER." or "BIGGER." or "REACTIONS!" or as rach put it... "MORE PIZAZZ."
10 November 2011 at 19:18 · Like

Though to some this is encouraging idea to some I find that it doesn't help at all and instead making people retract into their shells. It also creates chaos, and in a group that's prone to getting a little too excited not useful at all.

STRIKE !

guys. um. well.
theres a strike for teachers on the 30th november, and its a huge one, like most staff are more than likely gonna be on strike, both at primary and college.
i mean, it is the wednesday morning performance that is affected by this, as i doubt that schools will take a school trip if half the teachers are on strike already.

Christmas Song Finale

Abbie Flitton
I know this could be quite a big thing but it kinda isn't... Last year they did the finale and went off then came back on and sang a christmas song, I know we said about winter wonderland as there leaving but I think it would be good if we had a song we all sang, not choreographed or nothing we just come back on sing a song (christmas) well known and
Jolly the whole audience can
Join in and last year it worked really well! It won't be hard to do we all just come back on and sing and dance like normal. Opinions ? x

Practise

During this lesson we did act one in the side room of drama. There isn't really that much to say about the lesson I don't recall any corrections or comments. However I do recall sitting down comforting Becky which ment that they spent more time working on the goodies scene. This was the scene of the white queens castle and going over the scene and the fall into it from the goodies journey song.

Ticket Price Debate

Abbie Flitton
beckie, do you think the tickets should be cheaper, like £4.50 sounds silly, but think £5 sounds alot!! xxx
Like ·  · Follow post · 1 November 2011 at 19:39 near Leicester

I really think this should not have been changed as the budget had been created around the original price. The only ticket price refuction that I think should have been allowed was when you have disabled people that bring their own chair and so don't take up an space and they also normally get a really bad view of the performance.

Trailer?

Hayley Quinn Cooper
Right guys, this is something that needs to be addressed, right now.

This bloody trailer thing.

I hate to burst everyones bubble but it won't happen next week, and tbh i don't think it should happen at all, and it's not "Oooo i can't be bothered." I went through the pros and cons, this is what i came up with...

Pros:
-We can send it to other schools to widen our audience
-We can play it in forms
-It could look really awesome and draw in crowds
-It could be funny and amusing and really effective
-It could make our panto more memorable

Cons:
-We can only do headshots
-We can't even do everyones headshots next week because i have only just ordered makeup this afternoon, meaning half the cast will be in makeup and half won't.
-If we are only doing from "Mirana." to "MAD HATTER!" It is going to only be 10 seconds long, and quite ineffective if we are trying to sell our panto, because it gives absolutely no information as to what our panto is even about, it just shows the characters, but if we go past "MAD HATTER!" All shots will still be above the neck and it will look like we don't know how to zoom out.
-If it is about 10-20 seconds long, it is really really not worth the time it will take to apply the makeup we don't own, and the hours it will take to edit (i heard a few people say it will take five minutes to edit, you people have clearly never had to edit anything... it will take a long time to get the timing swift and right.)
-The years that have gone before us have packed out every single night and they didn't have a trailer.-If it looks like cack, it will more likely drive people away that bring people in.
-Most people already understand the idea of a pantomime and the posters and broadcast takeover should give them an idea of what it's about.
-All of this is going to suck up what little rehearsal time we have left, and considering we are already so scarily far behind where we should be, i think we need all the time we can get.
-Did i mention i can't do any of your makeup?
-Did i mention that at all?
-You'll all have naked faces :P
-Just sayin'.

The posters i can do over this coming week, as soon as my makeup kit arrives, i will get on it like anything and stay up late doing some serious editing if i have to, but really, this can be spread out, but it's doable and will look good once i'm done with it.

But the video... it just feels as though we've wasted an entire week faffing about with it... and we have balls to show for it... i think the time would be far better spent rehearsing.

Please tell me someone feels the same way about this, because it's doing my head in so much... it seems like so much effort for so little a result that people will forget by the end of the day... I hate to be such a moany bitch but it's driving me up the wall that this has become such a big deal...

Abbie Flitton i feel exactly the same as i said today! me and beckie were going to go at lunch to tell mr cooper its off anyway :) we need to prioritise what is going to happen on the night as we dont want to look like a bunch of students who have pulled off a shit performance and we had a great trailor?

Hayley Quinn Cooper and in regards to running it by you, although you are director, and make directorial decisions and shit, things like this ultimately fall down to the production roles, like for the trailer it would concern publicity, makeup and tech, because of filming and editing, so me, abbie, beckie and taz, but mainly abbie and beckie really, cause if it sucks ass it's on their heads because they put it out there. I get what you mean about you wanting to know about these things, which if it'll effect a massive lot on stage is fair enough. But just so long as you know that you may be playing one, but you're not really a queen ;) so don't feel personally offended if individual departments haven't let you know something straight away, don't worry, they will (: ♥

I was gutted that we didn't do a trailer as they are a lot more convincing to get an audience to watch the show. This was based on the fact that when you perform a little segment of the panto is honestly looks rubbish.

Me and Alys were speaking, and we decided aht my opening to Proud Mary, as awesome as it would be wouldnt be able to have enough dancers on stage. there for we need something we can have more linear formations... then good ol' genius struck in... so sorry Abbi, but we've changed it to the Cancan :)

Hayley Quinn Cooper I gotta agree with Abbi on some of these, if they've worked really hard to learn and rehearse something, it's completely unfair to tell them their hard work was for nothing. We can work around these little things. Oh and Abbi, I think we were in about removing the drum beat from that song, it sounds great but when the drum kicks in it throws the natural delicateness of it off a bit (: oh and also, I think I know why we had the mix up with the last song being on a backing track or not, I think you thought it was going to be an orchestral number because Dr Ratcliffe was pushing for it, but we all know we can't sing it loud enough (or manage any of the crazy fuck words :P) but I'm sure it's easily fixed (: tell Beth Btec really appreciates all the work they've been doing ♥

Rehearsing ...

After sorting out the table for the mad hatter scene, we carried on to the final scene

-The White and Red Queens and their friends sit at the table, all of the evil characters sit on the right side (from the audiences point of view, this was done to relate back to the theater convention of having the goodies and the babies on certain sides of the stage) of the table, and all of the good characters sit on the left, all squashed in, and then the queens are sat on their thrones at either end, the Hatter is sat in the center, on a toadstool prop.

The Hatter begins talking in rhyme and everyone else at the table rhyme's too. There is a comic element from The Red Queen with her line of "I won't rhyme not one bit, I find all this rhyming to be quite sh..." at the the characters gasp as  everyone know which word he is about to say. The Hatter explains that he stole the lost pages for himself to stop the fighting in wonderland and says that the pages will go to the most deserving which inadvertently starts a fight, as the Red Queen thinks the most deserving means the strongest, or the one who wins a fight.

"A fight scene commences between the two queens, and The Red Queen distracts The White Queen and then pushes her to the ground, she then snatches the remaining pages from The White Queen and The Hatter, and shows off about having them. As she gloats the good characters use Fairy Gee's want to pop one of The Red Queens balloon boobs, distracting her, whilst the good characters free Alice and capture Hook, Smee and Evil Stepmother. While they do that, Tweedle Dee takes the remaining pages and hands them to Dum as a peace offering, he accepts and gives them to Alice, who in turn, gives them to the Hatter, back to the original owner. The Cheshire Cat sneaks away as The Red Queen is captured and chained up by Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, and then everyone notices that The Cheshire Cat is missing, he is seen sneaking offstage but is caught by Prince Charming and given the 'Cone of Shame' a pet cone to stop animals from biting wounds, but also greatly humiliating, he is grabbed by the scruff of his neck and with The Red Queen is lead off to her own dungeon."

-Each of the characters are sent back to their books, evil characters are banished from Wonderland, never to return, and the good characters return to their books, but not before a song. The song 'We Go Together' from Grease plays, and this is when the characters go off and everybody takes their bows.

This scene has been very clearly structured now, and is almost perfect, the only thing it lacks is slickness and smoothness, and that is simply due to amount of rehearsal time. When we first did the finale bows the whole group enjoyed it and it was amazing it's just a shame that the same energy is not present in the rest of the panto.

We are roughly 6 weeks away from performance currently, and i believe with hard work, this pantomime is going to be a massive success.

All scenes are now blocked and staged and ready, all that is left is to rehearse until perfect.

Rehearsing ...

Since blocking the scenes and staging the entire script, we have been focused heavily on rehearsal, including the rehearsal of songs, we are now approximately 23 days away from our first performance, and we are having a runthrough of act one during a 3-7 after school rehearsal. We are now at a stage where everything is slowly coming together, and everyone is off of scripts, minus a few forgotten lines, we are not yet ready for performance but I believe the next 23 days will be used effectively and hopefully we will get all we need done.

Posters and tickets are going out this week, I have been designer for these posters, and there are multiple character posters going out, as of yet I do not have photos of all of the characters to make the rest of the postes, due to a techincal issue with the camera, but I aim to have all of the posters done by the end of the week, and they will begin to go out as soon as they are printed.

Performance wise, I have learnt all of my lines, however I need to work on learning cues for when those lines fall, as occasionally I won't realise my line follows another. Other than that I believe I have developed my character effectively, but I need to constantly work on projection, regardless of the fact that i will have a radio mic, I cannot let vocal projection slip

Finale Dance

James Sampson
check us out and our mad finale dance skills!

Rehearsing ...

In this lesson we didn't have a warm up, but we worked on the final scene, Act 2 Scene 4, The Mad Hatter's Tea Party, in which we discussed various ways in which we could set up the table, my original idea, as script writer, was to have one long table, spanning the width of the stage, with the Hatter in the middle, and the two queens on either side, next to The Red Queen would be all the evil characters, squashed in together along one side, and the same with the good characters next to The White Queen, the squashed in look would be funny because all of them would be cramped, too cramped to fit in at that table, whilst trying to eat.

However, as this was not discussed beforehand, most people did not understand how the table had been originally mapped out, meaning lots of people had different ideas, some wanted the table to go down the length of the stage, getting bigger as it got closer to the audience, so at the edge of the stage, it would be large, but at the back of the stage it would be smaller, giving the appearance that the table was very long, however, this would mean it would be hard to see all characters, and some audience members would be able to see some characters, but not others, not just this, but the illusion would only work for those sitting next to the isle, for everyone else the angle wouldn't be right and the purpose would be lost, not to mention the excess material and wood used to craft the table. In terms of practicallity, this idea would just not work, and so was cut.

The other idea that was discussed was the idea of having two tables diagonally at either side of the stage, one side for evil, and one for good, but this would look too much as though it were broken and in bits, which in some aspects may work, seeing as the Hatter is 'Mad' but in the end it was dropped. This idea has a better chance of working, however, in terms of stage space, it may be problematic. So this idea was cut also.

The third idea mentioned was the idea of completely removing tables, and having it laid out as a picnic, however, this was also impactical in terms of stage space, as the fight scene at the front of the stage could not happen, because there would be a picnic blanket with cultery, plastic food and crockery, and so fighting over it would be too dangerous to continue. So we got rid of that idea too.

We later, went back to my original idea, of having a long table, covered in table cloth, that will seperate during the fight scene between the two queens. Because this idea works out of practicallity, which i mentioned at the start, but due to many people having ideas, we had to try all options, just in case we found something better, but as it came down to it, we didn't.

The idea of having the table in a line works in terms of being practical, because it leaves pleanty of space at the front, however, the Queens thrones are moved from next to the Hatter to the ends of the table, simply because the bases that they are on (mounted on wheels for movement) are too large, and would not allow the rest of the characters to be at the table. So the queens were moved to the end, and benches were put along the tables for the other characters, allowing maxium squashing to occur. The reason this works is because the space left at the front works for the fight scene, and the queens being at the edge means that they can get out of their seats easily, without an awkward fuss or knocking the tables over (although this was an original idea that was scrapped due to lack of interest) As the fight scene commences, the tables have to be seperated so that they can allow the evil and good character to rush to the aid of thier queens. The tables would be moved away, to the back, diagonally towards the back of the stage, towards the book, because there was not enough room offstage to fold the tables away, plus it would leave the stage bare.

Real Tree's ?

Leanne Amy Hollingsworth
Hey guys, my mumma had a really good idea today. Instead of us using wood to make the trees she said we could ask a garden centre aka ullesthorpe to see if we can borrow some of there trees if we put them in the ummmmmm leaflet? booklet? um whats the fucking word :(... the things we have when it's the shows? but yeah anyway, she said we can go down tomorrow. So Rachel Howard I think I may be going down third... I shall let Beth know as it is to do with set and if they say that's fine, then we shall go down tomorrow and have a look :) this will be easier for not only our budget, but also make it look more "foresty" (Katie Bird's words) Is that okay? xx

Rehearsing ...

To start this lesson off, as usual, we had one of BTEC lead in a warm up, this time it was Beckies turn to lead the warm up session.

She decided to work, simultaneously on voice and movement, by giving our characters emotions to portray. She told us to think of a line that our character would say, and then walk around saying that line, in a particular emotion. For example, walk as if your character was sad, whilst saying your line in the same manner.

We went through happy, sad, angry, scared and surprised.

For this i chose the line "Hello my friendzzz..."

For happy, i just played up mischievous and cunning, as i think Chesh' would only be happy when he was getting his own way, or causing havoc. So i strode around purposefully, yet still delicately on the balls of my feet and toes, with a lot of arm movement thrown in because i like to make his mannerisms quite large and elegant looking, so when he strides, he strides through the air in a bound, and as his feet reach the floor, his arms carefully keep him balanced (key as cats have superb balance) As for the line, i read this with a slight chuckle in my voice as though he were pleased with himself, and to really live up to the cliche... like a cat that got the cream.

Next we did sad, which was harder to put to my character, as i had never envisioned him to be much of a one who had time to be sad, however, needs must and i attempted to put something to the character. I decided he would still attempt to have a spring in his step, but only every now and then, mostly he'd just drag his feet, and hunch his back severely. He would occasionally try to maintain some slyness and slickness but it would be lost in translation as his sadness interrupted his stride. I would say the line in a way that would be almost mumbled, because although the line is "Hello my friendzzz." in order to do this line, i thought he could being saying hello, purely out of politeness (though i don't believe he would be all that big on polite, being evil and all) but i thought that if he were to say it, much like the occasional dragging of his feet and tail (though of course, it's harder to show that without actually having a tail myself...) his voice would drag too, into a gentle mumble.

For the next one, angry, i decided to have my character fly into action, as i thought, if he were angry, he would move faster than he already does, meaning i had to swiftly dart around the room, in and out of people, charging towards whatever he was angry at. After all, he is a cat, if he were angry, i would think it only appropriate he would pounce. When i first tried to find inspiration for my character, i looked towards Scar from The Lion King, as he was a perfect role model to base this character around, and when he gets angry (which is often) he really gets angry. I figured it would be best to take inspiration once again from Scar and put it into Cheshire, and so his actions were very much like that of a much larger wild cat, as apposed to the kitten he sometimes pretends to be (a little like Puss In Boots from Shrek 2) As for the line, i think it was simple enough, i just made it sound cunning, devious and very much as though, even though he was angry, he was preparing for revenge, making the "Hello my friendzzz." sound very sinister.

We moved onto scared for our next emotion. Now i do think my character has tendencies to show cowardice from time to time, but i wasn't quite sure how to put it into action on this one, so i just improvised without thinking too hard on the matter. I ended up making him seem quite twitchy and nervous, as well as quiet and he would hide behind the things in the room, such as pillars, and even other people. Though if this is how i really feel the character would react, i am not sure, he would probably be similar, but not as twitchy perhaps. That seems far more characteristic of The White Rabbit.

Our last emotion to work with was surprised, for this i found the movements easy, as they were just more upright and unsure than usual, very similar to the way a meerkat stands whilst on lookout, but it makes them look very surprised. However, the line didn't really fit at all, but i just said it with a surprised tone anyway.

In the lesson we started to block Act 2 Scene 1, the scene where the good characters are feeling hopeless after the kidnap of Alice, The White Queen then attempts to cheer them up by singing "If You're Happy And You Know It..."

We decided to have an action for each character. As The White Queen started, she had the well known "Clap your hands!" command, to start the characters off, and to give the audience a chance to sing along.

We then created one for each character.

For Prince Charming, we had "If you're happy and you know it, strike a pose!" at which point all character strike a pose.

For Fairy Godmother, we had "If you're happy and you know it, make a wish!" followed by a wand waving action.

Then we had Red Riding Hood, who was hard to find one for, but in the end we decided as she is off to visit her grandma, we had "If you're happy and you know it, wave to gran!" at which point, an extra, dressed as an old lady would come out and say "Hello dear!" dressed as an old woman. But as this happens three times, we have 3 people dressed as old women appearing from different parts of the stage.

For Cinderella we had "If you're happy and you know it, sweep the floor!" and they all mime sweeping actions, this was because of Cinderella's past spent cleaning and cooking for her evil stepmother and stepsisters.

For Rapunzel we had "If you're happy and you know it, brush your hair!" but because this character has the tendency to be very Chavvy, Rachel, the girl playing her, improvised "If you're happy and you like totally know it, brush your hair!" which when she said it fast, and over and over again, was really quite funny and so has been kept in.

Tweedle Dum is on stage at this point, sulking and being upset about not finding his brother sooner, i put forward the idea of The White Queen singing her line again but tripping up Tweedle Dum so when she gets tot the line "and you know it..." she would fall off stage and say "I'M OKAY" so the song would go "If you're happy and you know it *crash* I'm okay! (still in tune)" But we finished the session before deciding what to do fully with that.

We later did an after school lesson where we worked on blocking Act 2 Scene 2, in which we worked on basic staging of characters, and spacing, plus many physical, visual jokes, such as The Red Queen standing over Alice whilst wearing a long dress, meaning Alice is stuck inside her dress. The Red Queen, knowing Alice has the book on her persons still, reaches under the dress to get it and pulls out a number of other items before finding the right one. This joke however, can only work if everything looks right, for instance, the dress must be long enough, and the timing has to be spot on for it to be funny. These are the things we have been working on.

Abbi Ellingworth
right this is the backdrop that HATS have, me and dad pretty easily rolled this out and back up blah de blah..
there are a few slight issues in that there is a hole in it (and when my close ups actually work on my phone i can show you) but if you lot do like it then yeah we can get it to lutterworth...
also i believe that this backdrop is smaller in height to lutterworth stage.. however as i've said to james we can add to it as long as its temporary and then we can get it back to HATS cuz it cost like £300...
but yeahh.. what do you think?

Dragons Den Task

Hayley Quinn Cooper
Okay, so i know this looks a bit naff. But keep in mind that a) i used my shit webcam, b) i knocked this up in like 20 minutes, and c) i'm gonna use fancy font, slr cameras, full makeup and airbrushing on this bitch. But this is a really basic (and shit) example of what i meant for the posters :')

Hayley Quinn Cooper I'll probably draw the 'TALES IN WONDERLAND' myself, and just change the colour for whatever poster we use, so it looks a bit more 3 dimensional and not so flat and plan and one coloured as this does (: also, it'll be easier to do when the pictures are of high quality :') it's impossibly working with a 1.3 megapixel webcam xD

Hayley Quinn Cooper apparently people were thinking a proper tickety one would be good, cause they normally have buisness card ones, and we wanted to be super hipster and edgy and cool and different ;)

Abbi Ellingworth my only concern with that is that theres only a £50 budget and there doesn't seem to be any cheap places that can do proper tickety ones... :/ although j'adore the idea
